Reiki literally translated from Japanese to English means universal life force energy. It is at the core of everything in existence. It is ALL that IS. Others may call it Qi, Prana, or even the Holy Spirit.

A Reiki attunement done in a Reiki class is a spiritual blessing performed by the teacher for the student. This blessing empowers the student to access the Reiki energy (universal life force energy) to a greater degree. It does not “connect” the student to something that they weren’t connected to before. It IS what they already are at their very essence. The attunement blessing simply allows one to access, anchor, and channel life force energy in a more conscious and empowered way for healing on all levels of mind, body, and spirit.

Reiki attunements are given in the traditional Usui Reiki lineage. The teacher, acting as a Reiki channel, will open the students crown, third eye, heart, and palm chakras, empowering the student to access Reiki energy in a more concentrated way. Once the attunement is completed it is permanent and the student will never lose the ability to channel Reiki.

In Holy Fire Reiki, we call attunements placements and ignitions. These terms were chosen because when William Lee Rand who received the Holy Fire energy, (another frequency of life force energy – there are many!), began developing it with other Reiki Masters, some saw the living flames of the Holy Fire in their mind’s eye being “placed” in certain areas of the body, such as the crown, third eye, heart, and just below the navel. This energy then spread throughout and “ignited” the entire body and auric field.

The difference between an Usui Reiki attunement and a Holy Fire Reiki placement and ignition is that the teacher does not channel the Reiki energy to empower the student in the Holy Fire practice. Rather, the Holy Fire works directly with the student to “connect” them to the Reiki energy in a way that is perfect and unique to them and surpasses any limitations of the teacher. We are only human after all! It is simply considered by some to be a more efficient empowerment process.

I know that as a Reiki channel you are only as strong and empowered as your practice. In any Reiki lineage for example, a student that has only received their Reiki Level 2 but practices every day and is committed to the Reiki path of healing and expansion, will be a stronger and more effective channel than a Master student who never practices. Anyone can receive the knowledge and blessings of Reiki. But it is what one does with that knowledge and those blessings that is most important and will be the primary governing agents along one’s journey of healing and empowerment.
